5 Summer Tips for Healthy Kidneys

With the UAE’s incoming hot and humid summer months, you really need to take extra care with special precautions to protect your health and well-being from the heat. Prolonged exposure to the heat can lead to increased heart rate and dehydration, which is hugely concerning for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or undergoing dialysis.

It can be challenging for these patients to maintain their recommended fluid and diet intake during summer; here are some tips to guide you better.

1) Enjoy the Summer Fruits & Vegetables

Summer fruits and vegetables are your go-to source for kidney-friendly nutrients! Take your pick from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables rich in water and low in sodium, phosphorus, potassium, and protein content.

Fruits such as watermelons, grapes, berries, and peaches are a top-favorite during summer! You can enjoy these fruits as is, or you can freeze them to make delicious summer smoothies.

On the other hand, vegetables such as cucumbers, lettuce, cauliflower, and celery are equally good options to include more in your summer diet.

It is best to consult your renal dietician or doctor regarding the recommended portion size of each fruit and vegetable suitable for your body mass.

2) Limit Daily Salt Intake

Extra salt consumption contributes to dehydration in addition to increased blood pressure. Hence, it is good practice to be conscious about your salt intake, especially if you are a CKD or dialysis patient. Onions are a great alternative to add sodium-free flavor to your dishes.

3) Avoid Summer Desserts

Ice-creams and chilled yogurts with sugary toppings are the most-enjoyed desserts during summer. Unfortunately, these desserts are rich in sugar, potassium, and phosphorous and must be avoided by dialysis patients and patients with CKD.

Additionally, diabetic patients with CKD or undergoing dialysis should watch their daily carbohydrate and sugar intake to ensure that their kidneys aren’t over-exerted due to excess blood sugar.

A fruit salad made of 2 to 3 kidney-friendly summer fruits with your daily recommended portion of sugar-free yogurt is a good dessert option during summer.

4) Stay Fit with Indoor Exercises

Don’t let the summer heat in UAE stop you from your regular physical activities. Regular exercise can help slow down the progression of kidney disease and regulate your blood pressure and sugar level.

You can consult with your doctor for a list of indoor exercises and movements suitable for your body.

5) Maintain Fluid Balance

It is tempting to drink more fluid during summer due to the extreme weather conditions, but patients with CKD and dialysis patients must watch their fluid intake. Excessive fluid intake can overwork your kidneys and cause electrolyte imbalance in your body. Consult with your doctor or dietician and stick to the recommended fluid intake suitable for your body.
